New Book: 'Learning in Womanist Ways' by Dr Jan Etienne

We are delighted to let you know about a new book by SCUTREA member Dr Jan Etienne, Birkbeck, University of London:

'Learning in Womanist Ways: Narratives of first-generation African Caribbean women'

Learning in Womanist Ways explores the benefits of lifelong learning for black Caribbean women who came to Britain in the 1950s and 1960s. The book features interviews of these women about their experiences of formal and informal learning, uniquely set out as dramatic scenes that reveal the women’s authentic voices as they are in their communities.

For further information please see the flyer at https://goo.gl/lXDvs7 or purchase via https://www.ucl-ioe-press.com/books/higher-education-and-lifelong-learning/learning-in-womanist-ways/#.

SCUTREA 2017 - Call for Expressions of Interest

Preparations are well underway for SCUTREA’s Annual Conference 2016 at the University of Leicester from 5-7 July, and we are looking forward to welcoming you. In the meantime, we would like to start the process of organising our annual conference for 2017. We therefore invite you to send in an Expression of Interest. Usually, the conference takes place around the first week of July, but another date can be proposed, as long as it does not clash with conferences organised by our friends from other adult education communities such as ESREA’s triennial conference, BERA post-compulsory SiG and UALL events.

The conference will be organised by the host institution, but the SCUTREA Council team would as always provide strong support, to include sending out the call for abstracts, regular posting of information and updates on the SCUTREA website and Twitter, reviewing and selecting abstracts, awarding bursaries, and assistance in selecting the best student paper prize. One Council meeting is usually held at the host university in order to visit the conference location and discuss practical arrangements.

Expressions of Interest should be sent to the SCUTREA Chair - Ellen.Boeren@ed.ac.uk - by Tuesday 3rd May 2016. This gives the Council time to discuss the proposals prior to our July conference, and make a formal announcement at the 2016 conference. All Expressions of Interest should be sent in Word format and attend to the questions we ask in the full call document here: Expressions of Interest Call.

We would also be delighted if you could pass this information on to any colleagues who may find this of interest.
